The Alsbacher document is an ethical testament written by Lazarus Kohn, a teacher in the small Jewish community of Unsleben in Bavaria, Germany. The group of Jewish immigrants from Unsleben were the company of settlers whose arrival late in the summer of 1839 marks the beginning of the Jewish community of Cleveland. This collection includes a photocopy of Lazarus Kohn's 1839 manuscript "Moses Alsbacher zum Abschied." Accompanying materials include a typewritten English language translation of the Alsbacher document, a photocopy of an 1839 passenger list from the SS Howard New York, and a photocopied 1979 letter from Judah Rubinstein to Rabbi Malcolm H. Stern.
